What are Dental Implants?
A dental implant actually refers to a small titanium post that resembles a screw. This titanium post is surgically implanted into the jaw bone just beneath the gum line. After being surgically implanted, the implant will permanently fuse with the bone in about 3-6 months. It will act as the tooth root providing a strong foundation for the replacement teeth. An abutment will be attached to the implant then we will permanently secure your new dental crown or attach your dental bridge or denture.

The first step in the dental implant process is thorough evaluation of your oral structure and placement planning. Dr. Wooddell and Dr. Passaro have been leading local Crofton, MD dentists in the incorporation of advanced 3-D digital imaging into implant dentistry for results that are more stable, predictable, and lasting.
Using CBCT scanning, we look at all factors affecting the position of your existing teeth or the structure of your jaw if all teeth are gone and a denture is being placed. This diagnostic imagery allows for more accurate and successful implant placement, minimizing impact to natural teeth or to the function of the bite for a better outcome and more stable implant.
After the planning phase, you will have the dental implants surgically implanted into your jaw bone. This will be performed by a skilled oral surgeon or periodontist in the Crofton, MD area. It will take about 3-6 months for that implant to completely heal and fuse with your bone. We will follow up with you to coordinate the next step and to monitor your progress.
Next, the abutment will be attached to the healed dental implant and we will take impressions of your mouth so that your new dental restoration can be created. When the tissue around the abutment is healed and your restoration is ready, Dr. Wooddell or Dr. Passaro will permanently secure your new dental crown, dental bridge, or denture.
