Invisalign FAQs: Cosmetic Dentistry in Annapolis, MD

Below, we answer commonly asked questions about Invisalign care and treatment:

Do you have to wear Invisalign aligners for 22 hours a day?

We recommend patients wear their aligners for 20 to 22 hours daily for optimal results. Invisalign treatment is programmed so patients switch out their aligners every two weeks. Only wearing Invisalign overnight or for half of the day will add more to the total treatment time. On average, Invisalign treatment can take 12 to 18 more months.

Do the first Invisalign trays do anything?

We provide you with your first Invisalign aligners, which will begin to apply slight pressure to the teeth. While you may not notice your teeth shift initially, the aligners will conform to your teeth but apply pressure to kick off the treatment process.

How do you clean Invisalign aligners?

There are several common methods that patients can use to clean their aligners. Invisalign cleaning crystals are mixed in water to soak and clean the aligners. Another similar alternative can be mouthguard or retainer tablets. Additionally, gently cleaning the aligners with liquid soap and lukewarm water can help remove bacteria from the aligners.

What are the benefits of Invisalign over metal braces?

Unlike metal braces, Invisalign doesn’t require:

  • Dietary restrictions against hard or crunchy foods
  • Regular dental visits to adjust the appliance
  • Cleaning around braces

Instead, Invisalign treatment offers removable aligners that allow patients to eat and drink what they want and clean their teeth thoroughly.

Is it ok to not wear Invisalign for one day?

It’s not ideal for patients to go without wearing Invisalign for more than a day. Teeth can shift out of their current position if patients go without wearing Invisalign for hours or days at a time. Ensuring that you keep your aligners and case with you at all times will help keep you on track.

Can you drink using a straw with Invisalign?

You can only drink water when wearing Invisalign. Even trying to sip other drinks through a straw can impact the aligners. Drinks can still mix with saliva in the mouth and interact with the aligners. We ask that patients avoid drinking soda, juice, wine, and other beverages with Invisalign.

How long do you wear a retainer after Invisalign?

You will wear a retainer constantly for six months after completing the Invisalign treatment. After this time, you will only need to wear your retainers at night to keep your teeth straight.
