How Are Cavities Treated?

Tooth decay affects more than 3 million people in the U.S. each year. Caused by poor oral hygiene, dry mouth, and sugary foods and beverages, tooth decay can be a serious problem that could cause teeth to fall out. However, there are multiple treatments used to clean and save infected teeth.

Treating Tooth Decay

Drs. Wooddell & Passaro offer multiple treatments for tooth decay in their office, including:

  • Dental Fillings: This treatment uses metal or a biocomposite material to seal out decay. The tooth receiving treatment is thoroughly cleaned before it is filled and polished for a long-lasting restoration.
  • Root Canal: Some patients may associate root canals with pain, but this treatment is no more painful than any other treatment. Root canals are actually used to alleviate the pain caused by an infected tooth or teeth, and remove infection. During treatment, infected tooth pulp is extracted and the tooth is cleaned and sealed.
  • Tooth Extraction: In the event where tooth decay is too severe for a filling or root canal, a tooth extraction may be needed. After a careful extraction, the tooth or teeth will undergo restorative treatment. Choosing from dental implants, dental bridges, or dentures restores the form and function of teeth.
